Bow Hunting

Bow hunting is an alternative to using a rifle. Hunting packages can be amended to allow for a hunter to bow hunt in Africa. Africa bow hunting is growing as more and more people take bow hunting up as a hobby and many bow hunting shops and ranges are in the major towns and cities.

Before coming to Africa, you must know your capabilities and should at least be able to shoot from either the sitting or standing positions. It is essential that you should also practice shooting through a relatively small hole from inside a blind as this kind of shooting from and enclosure can be distracting. You should know the anatomy of African game as shot placement is everything. The heart-lung area tends to be situated much lower and farther forward in African game.

Our permanent pit blinds are custom build from natural materials. The hides are located at watering points or salt lick stations with a shot distances between 30 - 40 meters, but most shots are closer than this when the game are relaxed and unaware of the hunter.

For plains game bow hunting, you should bring your normal set up you would use for example whitetail or any other type of deer. You don't need to buy a special 80lb bow set up just to shoot plains game. We have clients who uses compound, recurve and long bows. The odd clients also uses crossbows. The most important aspect of your bow hunt will be that you are very familiar with and proficient shooting the hunting bow you bring with you on your bow hunt to Africa. Buying a brand new bow just before you start you bow hunting safari is not recommended.

Unlike rifle hunters, bows are currently not regulated coming into South Africa. You would simply pick up your bow at the oversized luggage area and proceed through the customs area. In the odd case a client does not want to bring their own hunting bow he or she can rent a bow from a shop and pay for the arrows. If you provide us your preferred hunting bow and specification we can pre-arrange the requested hunting bow from one of our service providers. Please remember, using equipment that you are not familiar with may affect your success rate.

The type of broad head you use must be what you use on similar sized big game such as whitetail, elk or any other type deer works fine on plains game animals.

The best time to bow hunt Africa is between the beginning of April and the end of September. This is late fall, winter and early spring for us so our weather is quite cool to moderate. The two best months for ,bow hunting are August and September. By this time, all of the small, scattered water holes have dried up so animals come to water daily. Most of the tree cover is gone and the grass short allowing you to see the animals coming in to drink from a good distance.
